After playing for over ten years as a cellist in the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Urban Ward switched his stand with a desk and became Orchestra Director at Gothenburg Opera. During his tenure as Orchestra Director, his orchestra won the prestigious Svenska Dagbladet’s Opera Prize for its outstanding quality. He continued his work at Gothenburg Opera as producer and project manager for productions including Tannhäuser, Der Rosenkavalier, Evita, and Romeo och Juliet.
After four years as Head of the Unit for Free Arts and Culture, City of Gothenburg Culture Administration, Urban returned to the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Concert Hall as their Communication Director. In this role, hie completely overhauled the image of the orchestra and the concert hall. With structural changes in the subscription system, he was able to significantly increase the occupancy. He streamlined the letting process of the hall to external organizers increasing profits, as well as starting to manage the restaurant and to run it as a for-profit venture within the hall.
The concert magazine Podiet, which he initiated, was nominated as Best magazine in the competition Swedish Design Award. He started and built GSOPlay, today one of the internationally leading digital concert platforms with millions of users.
